Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas, sitting in for EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, chaired the 10th EU-Tunisia Association Council yesterday, in Luxembourg.
Tunisia was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Faycal Gouia, while Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle participated on behalf of the European Commission.
The meeting saw the reaffirmation of the very good relations between the European Union and Tunisia, as well as the underlining of the European Union’s resolve to further tighten and deepen these relations, as Tunisia is an important partner in the southern Mediterranean region.
The Association Council welcomed Tunisia’s achievements to date in the process of democratic transition, stressing that Tunisia is a model for other countries in the region. The EU encouraged the Tunisian government to continue carrying out the reforms and expressed its readiness to continue to support Tunisia in its efforts.
Finally, Mr. Kourkoulas noted the historical ties between the peoples of Greece and Tunisia, underscoring that the values of democracy, of the rule of law and of human rights are shared in common and constitute a firm foundation for further tightening of our relations.
