Greece’s substantial and active participation in the UN with the aim of maintaining international peace and security, was emphasized today by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Kotsiras in his address, representing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at an event marking the 78th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
"The principles advocated by the most significant institution of the international community, the UN, as the guarantor of international order and security, respect for human rights, the sovereign equality of all states, the protection of the environment, the right to development and prosperity, are also the compass guiding our country's foreign policy", Mr. Kotsiras underlined.
They are constitute the framework of Greece's candidacy for an elected member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, as the Deputy Minister mentioned, stipulating its main priorities: peaceful settlement of international disputes, respect for international law, women's empowerment and protection of children, fight against climate change and maritime security.
"The United Nations remain a valuable institution that we must safeguard in order to deliver a just, sustainable and hopeful world to future generations", Mr. Kotsiras pointed out.
Lastly, the Deputy Minister made a special reference to the crisis in the Middle East, underscoring our country's readiness to contribute to any peace initiative. "Greece remains a pillar of stability in the wider region and promotes dialogue and cooperation as a counterweight in the face of serious risks of regional escalation," he stated. Mr. Kotsiras added that the Greek government "condemns violence, terrorism and inhuman treatment. In parallel to Israel's obvious right of self-defense following the Hamas terrorist attack, we support the immediate release of hostages and abductees, as well as the provision of humanitarian assistance to all civilians."
The event was organized by the Region of Attica, in cooperation with the UN. It began with the hoisting of the Greek and UN flags at the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, followed by speeches and wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
