As a pillar of stability and an active member of the UN, committed to dialogue, democracy and diplomacy, Greece functions as a trusted interlocutor in today’s complex geopolitical environment. This was stressed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Kotsiras in his address today at an event marking the 79th anniversary of the founding of the UN.
As Mr. Kotsiras underscored, “this year’s anniversary is of particular importance for Greece,” as last June our country was elected “triumphantly, with the unanimous support of the international community,” as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
During its two-year term on the Security Council, Greece will focus on the peaceful resolution of disputes, protection of international law, security of international shipping, response to climate change, and protection of women and children during armed conflicts. “These are contemporary global challenges that we must face collectively and in a coordinated manner,” the Deputy Minister stressed.
The event was organised by the Region of Attica, in collaboration with the UN. It began with the raising of the Greek and UN flags on the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, followed by addresses and wreath-laying at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
