Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos communicated by phone this afternoon with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy.
Mr. Fahmy asked to brief Mr. Venizelos on the situation prevailing in Egypt, with emphasis on the Egyptian government’s decision to set up an independent committee on the events of recent days. Mr. Fahmy reiterated his government’s commitment to comply with the roadmap for full functioning of democratic institutions and the holding of elections.
Mr. Venizelos expressed Greece’s great concern and its strong and longstanding interest in the stability of its friend Egypt, mentioning the great contribution of the Patriarch of Alexandria and the Greek communities to the life of the country, and expressing his trust that the Egyptian authorities will maintain the security of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Greek communities.
Mr. Venizelos reiterated to the Egyptian Minister – with whom he had also held talks immediately after the formation of the current Egyptian government – that Greece, within the political framework of the European Union, is always prepared to assist the Egyptian people, who are linked to the Greek people by close bonds of friendship.
