Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos met in New York on Thursday, 26 September, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, within the framework of Ministerial Week at the 68th UN General Assembly.
During their meeting, 30 October was finalized as the date for Mr. Lavrov’s visit to Athens, and they discussed the whole range of Greek-Russian bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on economic cooperation, the increasing flow of Russian tourists, and Russia’s investment presence in Greece and participation in the privatization process.
They also discussed issues concerning the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the Lighting of the Olympic Flame.
They then reviewed the state of play in the process of approval and ratification of the various bilateral contracts that have been signed, and they discussed the holding of a Greek Year in Russia, and a Russian Year in Greece, in 2016, as well as the updating of the next Joint Action Plan.
In addition to bilateral issues, the discussion extended to major current affairs, and, specifically, the Lavrov-Kerry initiative and the impending UN Security Council resolution on Syria.
