Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos met today, Wednesday, 5 February, with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thornbjorn Jagland.
During their meeting they discussed the new CoE initiatives regarding the necessary institutional changes, and Mr. Venizelos informed Mr. Jagland of Greece’s willingness to develop close cooperation with the CoE in that direction.
Mr. Venizelos stressed that many significant changes have already been made to Greece’s national legislation, so that there should be full harmony with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, underscoring that Greece, as an old CoE member state, attaches great importance to this institution as the guardian of European values.
Finally, Messrs. Venizelos and Jagland discussed migration issues and issues concerning Golden Dawn and the confronting of the threat of Nazism, xenophobia and racism in Europe.
