Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos met today with the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy Matthew Nimetz, who is visiting Athens and Skopje in the framework of the negotiation process under the UN for the resolution of the name issue.
During the meeting, Mr. Venizelos made reaffirmed Greece’s support for Mr. Nimetz’ effort toward finding a solution and reiterated the Greek side’s position that progress in the negotiations and the achievement of a mutually acceptable solution on the name issue will contribute to the improvement of Greek-FYROM bilateral relations, the strengthening of stability in the wider region of Southeast Europe, and the creation of a new dynamic in FYROM’s European and Euroatlantic course.
Mr. Venizelos also set out the government’s stance on the developments so far, on the prospects for the talks, and on the ideas and proposals of Mr. Nimetz, underscoring Greece’s readiness to contribute actively to the continuation of the negotiation process.
