The European Parliament wrapped up its proceedings today, Wednesday, 16 April 2014, with a commemorative sitting of the Plenary, ahead of the elections for the new European Parliament on 25 May.
The debate was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. On the occasion of this anniversary, the subject of the debate was the foundations and prospects of European integration.
Speakers in the debate, which was chaired by Martin Schulz, included the President of the Council of the EU, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos; the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso; and the heads of the parliamentary groups in the European Parliament.
Following the debate, Messrs. Joseph Daul, Hannes Swoboda and Daniel Cohn-Bendit – parliamentary group heads who will not be candidates for the new European Parliament – bid farewell to their colleagues.
