E. VENIZELOS: The President of the Republic, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and I are linked by a long and sincere friendship, and we had the opportunity today to continue a discussion we have been having for years on the course of the national issue, on the situation in the wider region, and on the economic crisis.
Because that is what concerns us at this time, as societies, as peoples, as the European Union, but also because the economic crisis has a real impact on foreign policy. But both the Hellenic Republic and, naturally, the Republic of Cyprus – I am certain – need to state that the economic crisis will in no way impact our reflexes and priorities with regard to foreign policy, the defence of national integrity and national sovereignty issues in general.
But it is of very great importance that we capitalize on our national resources, to keep active our national sovereignty rights deriving from international law, and remain fully aware of the interrelations that are changing constantly because the region is generating new problems as well as new opportunities.
Thank you very much.
