Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ statement on the situation in the Middle East, following the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, 22 July 2014)Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos made the following statement on the situation in the Middle East, following the proceedings of today’s EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels:

“Regarding the situation in the Middle East, and more specifically in Gaza, Greece has from the outset, in a number of diplomatic interventions, supported the Egyptian initiative. The Egyptian initiative is supported by the Arab League and is the only specific initiative that can produce results: an immediate ceasefire, a return to the status of the ceasefire of 2012. And, naturally, the ultimate goal is the reopening of the peace process. But what must be avoided is the continuation of the humanitarian crisis in the region.”
