Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ statement regarding the bloodshed in Egypt

“We are very distressed and concerned at the violence, polarization and conflict occurring in the friendly, neighbouring country of Egypt.

In these critical hours, all sides need to show self-restraint and avoid actions that undermine the potential for understanding and a coordinated democratic course.

We are extremely concerned at reports of clashes between supporters of various religious groups and attacks on Christian houses of worship.

Everyone has a great responsibility to avoid civil strife, to keep our neighbouring country from being dragged into open conflict, to ensure that prudence and dialogue prevail so that the democratic institutions can function.

Our Embassy and Consular Authorities in Egypt are on alert and in ongoing contact with the Patriarchate of Alexandria and organizations of the Greek community.”
