Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos made the following statement regarding the vandalization of the Holocaust Memorial in Athens:
“I express my profound abhorrence of, and unequivocally condemn, the vandalization of the Holocaust Memorial in Athens.
This is a barbaric act that brutally insults not just the history of the Jewish Community, but the Greek people as a whole, who respect and honor the memory of the tens of thousands of Greek Jews who met with tragic deaths in concentration camps during the Holocaust.
I want to assure our fellow citizens, and particularly the Jewish Community, that the Greek authorities will do everything humanly possible to identify and arrest the perpetrators of this overt act of anti-Semitism and intolerance that is incompatible with the democratic values of tolerance and multiculturalism espoused by Greek society.”
