Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ talks regarding the developments in Egypt and Syria

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos had phone talks today with EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, who took the initiative of calling him in view of the developments in Syria. During their conversation, Mr. Venizelos briefed Mrs. Ashton on his upcoming visit to Cairo, on Thursday, 5 September.

Mr. Venizelos also had telephone talks today on issues related to Syria, as well as on issues related to Egypt, with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and with Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, who visited Cairo last week.

Mr. Venizelos also talked with Patriarch John of Antioch, with whom he discussed the situation in Syria and the need to protect Christian populations.

Tomorrow, Mr. Venizelos will meet at the Foreign Ministry with Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, due to the critical situation prevailing on the Sinai peninsula and specifically in the area close to the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine.
