Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos to attend the EU Foreign Affairs and General Affairs Councils in Brussels (16-17 December 2013)

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos will be in Brussels on Monday, 16 December, to participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC).

The FAC agenda includes Southern Neighbourhood issues, with emphasis on developments in Syria and Lebanon. There will also be a discussion of the Eastern Partnership, with a focus on EU-Russian relations. Also on the FAC agenda are the course of the Middle East peace process and the enlargement perspective of the Western Balkans.

On the margins of the FAC, there will be a working luncheon for the 28 EU member-state Foreign Ministers and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on the subject of European Union-Russian Federation relations.

On Tuesday, 17 December, Mr. Venizelos will participate in the EU General Affairs Council (GAC).

The GAC agenda includes preparation of the draft conclusions of the upcoming European Council (19-20 December), the consideration of enlargement issues – and particularly the adoption of Serbia’s Negotiation Framework with the EU – and the course of the Stability and Association Agreements.

Finally, an assessment will be carried out of the functioning of the European External Action Service, and there will be a briefing on the results of the informal Ministerial Meeting in Vilnius (26 November), at which cohesion issues were discussed.
