Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos to participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, 20-21 January 2014)

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos will participate on Monday, 20 January, in the first EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) to take place since Greece assumed the Presidency of the Council.

The FAC agenda includes Southern Neighbourhood issues, with emphasis on developments in Egypt and Syria, and the impact of the Syrian crisis on Iraq and Lebanon. There will also be a discussion of the Middle East peace process and developments in Afghanistan.

The working luncheon will focus on the outlook for EU-Russia relations ahead of the upcoming EU-Russia Summit Meeting in Brussels.

During the evening session, The European Foreign Ministers will consider the security situation in South Sudan and the political, military and humanitarian dimensions of the crisis in the Central African Republic.

Subsequently, Mr. Venizelos will brief the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) on the priorities of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union and on the results of the Foreign Affairs Council.
