A strong earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand, yesterday, causing dozens of deaths -- according to reports so far – and extensive material damage to buildings and infrastructure. The New Zealand authorities are making efforts to rescue persons trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The Greek Embassy in Wellington is in contact with representatives of the Greek community in Christchurch, who have not reported any Greek casualties among the victims of the quake.
Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas sent his condolences to his New Zealand counterpart, Murray McCully.
