Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos conferred by telephone last night with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, following the announcement of the ceasefire agreement reached between Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza.
During their conversation, Mr. Avramopoulos welcomed the diplomatic efforts of the Egyptian side and President Morsi himself; efforts that resulted in an agreement that provides an opportunity for the region to return to peace.
The two Ministers discussed the broader developments in the Middle East and the serious risks that still exist and threaten stability in an extremely critical state of affairs, while they agreed on the need for strict compliance with the ceasefire agreement, and for both sides to exercise self-restraint.
Mr. Amr briefed Mr. Avramopoulos on the prospects following the reaching of the agreement. Mr. Avramopoulos briefed his counterpart on the discussions on the Palestinian issue and the situation in Syria within the framework of the EU, expressing Greece’s support for the efforts of the Egyptian side, which he encouraged Mr. Amr to continue.
The two Minister agreed to stay in regular touch and coordinate on all developments.
