Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos met today with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov.
During their meeting, they reaffirmed the historical ties of friendship that govern the relations between Greece and Russia and the Greek and Russian peoples, while they also focused on the potential for further enhancement of Greek-Russian cooperation in all sectors through specific and substantial steps that will be accompanied by upgraded political contacts at the highest possible level.
In this context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit Greece early next year, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Avramopoulos.
Other topics discussed during the meeting included the progress of the consultations on the signing of the new Greek-Russian Action Plan for 2013-2015, energy cooperation between the two countries, and the strengthening of tourism.
Mr. Avramopoulos stressed that Greece is one of the most positive supporters of the mutually beneficial development of EU-Russian relations, pointing to Greece’s active support on the issue of waiving Schengen visa requirements for Russian citizens visiting Europe.
