Over these two days, we discussed critical issues for the Alliance, as well as serious developments in our region.
We had a very useful meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, agreeing to work together to boost our relations into a new dynamic period in vital sectors: investments, energy, tourism. We thus marked the revitalization of our bilateral relations, and, if all goes well, Mr. Lavrov will be visiting Greece this coming March.
In the discussion on the Middle East, we stressed and pointed up the stabile and stabilizing role Greece plays and the efforts we are making to consolidate peace in the region. Regarding Syria, I reiterated our firm stance that a military solution is not an option, and that a political process has to be initiated, giving the Syrian people the opportunity to decide their own fate and future.
NATO enlargement was one of the important issues for Greece at this Ministerial. The rise in nationalism and populism in certain of our neighbouring countries is a source of great concern. I made it clear in every direction that such conduct in unacceptable. Candidate countries – whether we are talking about NATO or the EU – must respect the principles and values of Europe. The bar will not be lowered, and all of the criteria and conditions will have to be met.
