STAVROS DIMAS: We had a very useful and constructive meeting with President Christofias, and I thank him very much for briefing me on the course of the talks. We also discussed other issues of common interest, as well as issues concerning the wider region.
Greece supports the effort to resolve the Cyprus issue and reunify Cyprus. We are dedicated to our common pursuit of a viable, functional and just solution that is in accord with the UN resolutions and the principles and values of the European Union; the European acquis.
Of course, we talked about problems that the wider region is facing and the need to bring about stability.
You are aware that Turkey is not contributing to the finding of this solution that is necessary on the Cyprus issue, and that is why we are not optimistic that there will be a solution that creates the necessary conditions for capitalization on all the potential our countries have.
From the issues we discussed, I see that Turkey could take certain steps that would allow for progress in the talks: Turkey needs to desist from and avoid statements and actions concerning the exclusive economic zone – statements and actions that are counterproductive, conflict with international law, and add to the tension in the region. I believe that Turkey needs to take those steps so that progress can be made in the talks.
We support the Republic of Cyprus with all our power. We support President Christofias’ negotiation efforts, and we want to send the message that we want to have good relations – Hellenism in Greece, in Cyprus – we want to have good relations with Turkey, but Turkey needs to reconsider its actions and statements.
Thank you very much.
