Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas had telephone talks yesterday and today with the Foreign Ministers of the Palestinian Authority, Mr. Al-Malki; Egypt, Mr. Elaraby; and Italy, Mr. Frattini.
The Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister briefed Mr. Droutsas on the talks between Fatah and Hamas being carried out with Egypt’s mediation.
Mr. Droutsas and his Egyptian counterpart discussed the progress of the Fatah-Hamas talks and the prospects for the Middle East peace process. They also talked about more general developments in the region and expressed their intention to meet soon in Athens for further consultations.
Mr. Frattini – who will be hosting the second meeting of the Contact Group on Libya next week – and Mr. Droutsas discussed developments in Libya. Mr. Droutsas reiterated the need for initiation of a political process that will provide a way out of the ongoing impasse and briefed Mr. Frattini on Greece’s relevant efforts. They also discussed UN Security Council reform issues.
