Foreign Minister Droutsas’ statement on the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1970 on Libya

Mr. Droutsas: Greece welcomes yesterday’s unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 1970, which, among other things, imposes sanctions on Libya and the Qaddafi regime.

Within this framework, sanctions are imposed on the sale of any military equipment to Libya. All Qaddafi regime assets are also frozen, and a travel ban has been activated for Qaddafi and members of his family and regime.

Resolution 1970 also calls on the International Criminal Court to investigate the violent anti-demonstration measures so as to ascertain the extent to which crimes against humanity have been perpetrated.

The unanimous adoption of this Resolution is tangible proof of the determination and will of the international community for there to be an immediate end to the violence in Libya and peaceful resolution of the problems, in a manner meeting the just demands of the Libyan people.

Greece expresses its support for the Libyan people and, in cooperation with its partners in the European Union, will continue to work to confront the situation. Europe has a duty at this critical time to continue to take decisive measures aimed at ending the violence immediately.

I reiterate Greece’s unequivocal condemnation of the actions of the regime, as stated by the Prime Minister in Berlin. We call on the Libyan regime to stop using violence immediately and listen to the people’s demands for a better tomorrow with hope, prosperity and cooperation.

Together with the European Union, Greece is prepared to stand by Libya on its course toward building an open society and strong rule of law that respect the universal rights of its people.
