Foreign Minister Droutsas’ statement on the events in Syria

Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas made the following statement today regarding the events that unfolded yesterday in Syria:

“The information we are receiving regarding the violent suppression of demonstrations in Syrian cities by government forces and the deaths of dozens of citizens is causing us great concern. The right to peaceful gatherings and free expression of opinions is a basic component of democracy and must be respected. We call for self-restraint and the immediate implementation by the Syrian government of the necessary reforms, to the benefit of the Syrian people and the country’s stability.”
