Foreign Minister N. Kotzias' statements following the meeting of the National Council on Foreign Policy (Foreign Ministry, 23 December 2016)

Foreign Minister N. Kotzias' statements following the meeting of the National Council on Foreign Policy (Foreign Ministry, 23 December 2016)N. KOTZIAS: For the third time in the past month, I briefed the parties of the Hellenic Parliament, this time in a special session of the National Council on Foreign Policy, which is our second session on Cyprus.

We agreed that we support a rational, effective, functional solution of the Cyprus issue, which means a Cyprus without foreign occupation troops and a Cyprus without guarantees.

We also agreed to intensify the exchange of views among the parties and the specialists each party has, and to ensure optimum cooperation amongst us.

The solution of the Cyprus issue is and must be based on unity from our country, which stands by the Cypriot people and the Cypriot government.

We also talked about the preparations being made ahead of the meetings on 9 and 12 January, in Geneva. I analysed the practical problems that we have before us and the way the Greek government is working to resolve those problems.

JOURNALIST: Mr. Minister, would you like to send a message to our neighbour?

N. KOTZIAS: What we want is a neighbour that is as democratic as possible and as Europeanized as possible. We want a neighbour that is not restless and that realises that it is in its long-term interest to support, rather than subvert, international law.Thank you.
