Foreign Ministry announcement on the passing of Honorary Ambassador Stephanos Stathatos

One of the most important figures of Greek diplomacy, Honorary Ambassador Stephanos Stathatos, has passed away.

Ambassador Stephanos Stathatos was a distinguished career diplomat – highly trained and with a profound sense of duty – who contributed significantly to shaping the country’s foreign policy.

He served in Cairo, in Washington, D.C., and at the Permanent Representations to NATO and the UN. As Greece’s Permanent Representative to the EEC, he contributed decisively to the efforts toward Greece’s accession to the European Economic Community.

He also served as Greece’s Ambassador to Paris, London, and the Vatican, and, after retiring from the diplomatic service, he participated in high-level committees on the institutional reform of the European Union.

During his career, he was distinguished for his conscientiousness, meticulousness, and ethos, as well as for his love for his homeland.

His passing is a loss to the country’s Diplomatic Service.

The Foreign Ministry’s leadership and all of Stephanos Stathatos’s colleagues express their deep condolences to his loved ones.
