Questions on minority education
The education matters of ethnic Greeks who reside in Türkiye is regulated in the 1923 Lausanne Treaty (Art. 40 & 41), the provisions of which are complemented by the 1951 Education Agreement and the 1968 Cultural Protocol signed by Greece and Türkiye .
Nevertheless, the Turkish administration has systematically hindered the running of the Minority Greek schools. Deliberate acts of the administration vis-à-vis the Greek minority had a serious impact to i) the decline in school enrolment from around 7,000 in 1960 to about 298 today (school year 2023-2024), ii) the deterioration of provided schooling and iii) the closing of many schools.
Since the school-year 2013-2014, Greece salutes the re-opening of the Greek minority primary school in Gökçeada Zeytinli (Aghioi Theodoroi Imvrou), as well as, since the school-year 2015-2016, the re-opening of the minority high-school on the island. As a result, minority education is provided on the island in all school stages, for the first time after 50 years.
