Francophonie

Francophonie

Greece's decision to join the “Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie” was dictated by the prospect of participating in a significant forum with a common language - French - and an area of shared values and solidarity, with the main objective of preserving and further promoting democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights, the consolidation of peace and security, as well as the protection of cultural heritage and linguistic diversity. The survival of national identities is also heavily reliant on the preservation of these ideals.

Greece became a full member of the International Organization of Francophonie in 2006, convinced of the added value that the OIF can provide in terms of stability and development, particularly in terms of the global dissemination of the French language. Greece itself can also contribute to the OIF's development in the interest of its own French-speaking community.

Greece's membership in the OIF provides it with additional access to a forum of 88 countries. It has also contributed to the promotion of Greece's candidacy for the UN Security Council for the 2025 – 2026 term.

Greece actively advocates for the Francophonie objectives on a practical level. It actively engages in initiatives and programs carried out in various OIF member states. In this regard it is deemed especially beneficial for the Greek Diplomatic Authorities to actively collaborate with representatives of other Francophonie member states at the local level in order to carry out similar programs.

Furthermore, Greece tries to ensure, as far as possible, that French is used within international organisations.
