International Maritime Organization (IMO)
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), headquartered in London, was established in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations, with the primary mission of ensuring the safety of international shipping, facilitating international maritime traffic, preventing ship-generated marine pollution, and regulating legal issues related to international maritime activity. The IMO has 175 member-states and 3 associate members.
Our country is one of the founding members of the IMO and is a member of Category "A" of the Organization's Council, where countries with the highest interest in international maritime transport are elected. Our country continues to contribute actively to shaping maritime legislation by participating continuously in all activities of the Organization's Committees and Subcommittees, proposing regulations that realistically govern maritime activity and apply on a global scale, to all ships irrespective of flag (flag-neutral), ensuring fair competition conditions (level playing field).
