World Tourism Organization
The WTO was established in 1975 and is a specialized agency of the UN. Its members consist of 160 countries and approximately 500 Affiliate Members from the private sector (e.g., tourist agencies, educational institutions, and tourist associations). Its headquarters are in Madrid.
Its main bodies include the General Assembly, the Executive Council, and the Secretariat. There are 6 regional committees for Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia - Pacific. Our country has been a full member of the WTO since 1975 and actively participates in its General Assemblies, the Commission for Europe, and various periodic meetings and sessions.
The WTO plays a central and decisive role in promoting the development of responsible and sustainable tourism, with a particular emphasis on developing countries. The organization encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, aiming for member countries, tourist destinations, and businesses to maximize the positive economic, social, and cultural impact of tourism while minimizing its social and environmental effects.
Our country, with a significant position in the international tourism market and a developed tourism sector, actively contributes to the work of the WTO. Our country was re-elected as a member of the Executive Council of the WTO for the period 2021-2025. It was also elected to the Vice Presidency of the European Region of the WTO for the period 2023-2025.
