Agriculture

The agricultural sector is of vital importance for the European economy, as it provides the main source of revenue for 20% of the EU population, which lives in rural areas.

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the period 2021-2027 made available the sum of € 386,6 billion in current prices for agriculture, of which 291,1 billion will be for Pillar I of CAP (direct payments to farmers) and 95,5 billion for Pillar II (agricultural development programs). The allocation of these funds ensures that the CAP remains a long-term policy, continues to support farmers and rural communities, guides the sustainable development of agriculture and reflects the European Union's ambitions for environmental and climate action. Overall, 40% of total CAP expenditure will be dedicated to climate action.

The new CAP for the period 2021-2027 aims at considerably improving the performance of agriculture, in areas such as environment protection and mitigation of the impact of climate change. It also offers greater flexibility for the member states to achieve the above-mentioned objectives based on their agricultural specificities. Greece considers that adequate funding of the CAP is the means for the member states to meet the new challenges facing Europe, such as food security, climate change and its effects, generational renewal of agrarian population, sustainability of rural areas, globalization, strengthening the position of farmers in the food chain and creating new jobs.
