Energy Union

The Energy Union is a key priority of the European Union, as the European energy system faces an increasingly pressing need to ensure safe, sustainable and competitive energy for all citizens. Reliance on a limited number of sources of supply, especially for natural gas, makes countries vulnerable regarding their supply. At the same time, the effects of climate change must be addressed by reducing both the dependence on fossil fuels as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, affordable energy costs and competitive energy prices are increasingly preoccupying households and businesses.

The Energy Union focuses on the following five (5) axes:

- Energy security, solidarity, trust: promoting security of energy supply, by reducing dependence on a single supplier, as well as cooperation with third countries, through agreements that meet the rules of transparency of the European Union.
- Internal energy market: free flow of energy across borders with strict application of existing rules in areas such as energy segregation, independence and reinforcement of the role of regulating authorities. Redesign of the electricity market, so that it is more interconnected and flexible.
- Energy efficiency: substantial review of energy saving policies in order to streamline energy consumption.
- Disassociation of the economy from greenhouse gas emissions: efficient absorption of locally produced energy, especially from renewable sources.
- Research, innovation and competitiveness: promoting the European Union's leadership in the field of technology, particularly in the new generation of renewable energy sources, expanding exports, but also the global competitiveness of European companies.

The main objectives of our energy policy are: (a) the development of energy interconnections to make Greece an energy hub in Southeastern Europe, (b) the strengthening of the country's geostrategic importance, (c) the use of endogenous resources (beyond fossil fuels) through the promotion of renewable energy sources; and (d) the development of innovative technologies that will create new jobs and at the same time strengthen the position of consumers providing competitive prices in the energy sector.
