Greek nomination of the European Court of Human Rights for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize

Following a decision of the Greek government, Greece has nominated the European Court of Human Rights for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

This initiative is the result of coordinated actions by the Greek government, headed by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The relevant letter to the Nobel Committee, whereby the Greek government nominates the European Court of Human Rights for the Nobel Peace Prize, was sent today by the Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.

Greece greatly appreciates the work of the European Court of Human Rights, an important institution for protecting human rights and safeguarding international justice, and recognises its wider contribution to the establishment and promotion of global peace.

The fact that Greece will hold the next Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (May–November 2020), the thrust of which will be the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights, the application of which is monitored by the European Court of Human Rights, is an additional reason for this nomination.
