Hellenic Institute for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice
The Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice was founded in 1951 as a Legal Entity of Public Law. The Institute is under the general supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; its educational and cultural activities fall under the supervision of the Ministry of Education (Law 4515/2017, Official Gazette of the Hellenic Republic A 198/8.12.2017).
The Institute aims at promoting Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies. In this context, the Institute, among others, (i) highlights the historical, philological and other aspects of the Hellenic Culture during Byzantine and post-Byzantine era, (ii) manages the paper, analogue and digital archival material and (iii) undertakes international publication activities.
The Hellenic Institute in Venice owns significant real-estate and movable property. This property includes the Church of St. George (San Giorgio dei Greci), the Museum of the Institute and the Flanghinis College. Furthermore, the Institute owns approximately 300 icons, including three icons of the Paleologean era, around 250 objects and worship items, the Archive of the Hellenic Institute in Venice (1498-1953), and a collection of manuscripts. The "Romance of Alexander the Great", which is an illuminated Byzantine manuscript, the Collection of Musical Byzantine Manuscripts, as well as patriarchal documents of the 16th century are exquisite examples of this collection.
