Highlights of Deputy FM Kouvelis’s welcome speech at a Federation of Greek Maricultures presentation of a European Food Safety Authority opinion

  • The effort toward the developmental jumpstarting of the economy has begun. The first results are already encouraging, particularly with regard to the increase in Greek exports. Specifically, Greek exports for the first quarter of 2011 came to some €4.6 billion, as against €3.5 billion for the same period in 2010, for a 31.5% increase and a record for the decade.
  • The strengthening of internationalization is a central development goal for strengthening the economy and guiding the country out of the crisis, and this is the Foreign Ministry’s primary initiative within the framework of economic diplomacy. Greek fish farming is evolving into one of the most dynamic sectors of the Greek economy, with a strong export orientation. I think that the success of Greek fish farming can serve as an example for other export sectors with similar prospects and dynamism.
  • I would like to refer to five Foreign Ministry actions concerned with the particularly dynamic export sector of fish farming:

1. Close cooperation with the Federation of Greek Maricultures through a special memorandum of understanding aimed at systematic utilization of synergies.
2. The hosting of special promotional events in markets abroad.
3. Participation in international trade fairs and organization of business delegations with the participation of producers/exporters of fish farming products.
4. The organization of special on-line information seminars by Commercial Affairs Offices.
5. Initiatives and appropriate representations to foreign authorities for the removal of obstacles and facilitation of investments and exports.
