ICBSS and the Azerbaijani Center For Strategic Studies host a Conference on "Energy Cooperation and Environmental Protection in the wider Black Sea area"

The International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS, a related body of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation) and the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SAM) hosted a conference – under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry – on Tuesday, 29 November 2011, on "Energy Cooperation and Environmental Protection in the wider Black Sea area". The Conference took place within the framework of the "Hellenic-Azerbaijani Green Energy Forum", an ICBSS and SAM initiative under which a roundtable discussion on climate change and renewable energy sources was held in Baku in July 2011.

The discussion focused on the promotion of Hellenic-Azerbaijani relations in the field of energy and environmental protection issues, with a view to promoting environmentally friendly policies and adopting a clean energy model in the wider Black Sea area.  

Introductory remarks were delivered by Konstantinos Papadopoulos, Secretary General, Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Dimitrios Tsoungas, Director, B2 Directorate International Economic Relations with the Balkans, Russia and the CIS, Monitoring BSEC, Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Gulshan Pashayeva, Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Anar Huseynov, Counsellor, Deputy Head of Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Hellenic Republic; and other staff of the Centre. Panellists included Greek former deputy foreign minister Spyros Kouvelis, and other ministry and agency personnel. The event was moderated by Dr. Zefi Dimadama, Director General, International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS).

Mr. Papadopoulos will meet on Wednesday, 30 November 2011, with Ms. Gulshan Pashayeva, Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, to discuss energy cooperation issues concerning the Natural Gas Southern Corridor and the promotion of join initiatives in the renewable energy sources sector.
