The Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Yannis-Alexis Zepos, met yesterday and today in Cairo with a number of Egyptian political figures, with whom he exchanged assessments of current developments in Egypt.
Specifically, Ambassador Zepos met with Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali, the head of the Committee of Wise Men, Professor Aboul Magd, the Secretary General of the Wafd party, Mr. Abdel Nur. He also met with the EU, French and U.S. Ambassadors to Egypt.
In his meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Shafiq, Ambassador Zepos had the opportunity to convey Greece’s extreme interest in current developments in Egypt, given the close ties that traditionally link the two countries. He also expressed Greece readiness to work with Egypt in any sectors deemed beneficial. The Egyptian Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the interest Greece is showing and underscored the importance to Egypt of Greek-Egyptian bilateral relations.
Finally, Ambassador Zepos met with members of the Greek community in Egypt, as well as with representatives of Greek enterprises and banks active there. He also spoke on the phone with Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II and the President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Mr. Stefanos Tamvakis.
