Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ message on Europe Day (09.05.2024)

In 1950, on the fifth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Declaration of 9th May, also known as the Schuman Declaration, laid the foundations of the European project.

The Declaration aimed to prevent future war by establishing a strong Union of European states since "world peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it."

Seventy-four years later, the European Union, which now consists of 27 Member States, vigorously defends democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and fundamental rights at both the EU and international levels.

When global peace and security are at stake, the EU's role is crucial for the preservation of international stability.

Greece, as one of its oldest members, has been contributing for more than four decades to achieving European unification, enlargement, and integration.

It is the duty of all European states, with the Schuman Declaration as a legacy, to continue to work towards promoting social cohesion, citizens' well-being, and ensuring Europe's standing as an essential player in the international community.
