Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement to ERT following his visit to Tirana (Tirana, 06.10.2023)

Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement to ERT following his visit to Tirana (Tirana, 06.10.2023)The Greek delegation in Tirana participated today in the Berlin Process regarding the accession of the Western Balkans to the European Union. This process was initiated by Greece when the Thessaloniki Agenda of 2003 outlined the European path of the Western Balkan countries. This is a prerequisite for prosperity and peace in the wider region, under the conditions set out by the European Council of course.

I also had the opportunity to meet with the Albanian Prime Minister and the Albanian Foreign Minister and discuss with them issues concerning the relations between the two countries. I also raised the issue of the ongoing temporary detention of Fredi Beleri and the rejection of the request he has submitted so that he can be sworn in and assume the duties entrusted to him by the people of Himarë. This continued rejection is a clear deviation from the European Rule of Law and of course from the presumption of innocence.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Greek Diaspora, and the Archbishop of Albania. I was briefed on issues concerning the Greek Diaspora, such as the demand for integrity in the current census process in Albania, as well as on the great educational, pastoral and cultural work carried out by the Archdiocese, which will be supported by the Greek State, just like in the previous years.
