Today we are in Malta, at the OSCE Ministerial Council. This meeting is critical for the future of the Organization, and it is also essential since it takes place under exceptionally adverse conditions in Europe, where there is still a raging war.
Greece will once again be at the forefront, building on its responsible stance over the last fifty years, while remaining committed to universal values, democracy, human rights and peaceful resolution of disputes.
My Turkish counterpart and I submitted a joint proposal for two of the four key positions of the Organization in May 2024. This move of high symbolism fosters peace and highlights the possibility of countries with historical burdens to coexist and become a driving force within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Greek candidacy obtained unanimity in the Permanent Council of Permanent Representatives. We await the final decision tomorrow.
In this case, Greece assumes a critical position within the OSCE, namely that of the Head of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, which is responsible for election integrity, the consolidation of democratic institutions, human rights, the protection of vulnerable groups and minorities and the elimination of inequalities.
Greece is constantly expanding its diplomatic footprint. The country is at the forefront of international developments, and within international organizations. Greece will continue to promote international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. And above all, the consolidation of peace and prosperity. Thank you.
