Today, I had the opportunity to converse with the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, at the UN headquarters in New York. We had an excellent discussion. We exchanged views on all the pressing issues, the major crises that the world is currently facing.
Greece, always committed to International Law and to a foreign policy of principles and rules, remains at the disposal of the United Nations. This is something that the Secretary-General appreciates and always looks forward to our cooperation.
Unfortunately, we are currently at a standstill in the Middle East, Ukraine, Haiti, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations has a significant role to play. We should perhaps consider the decision-making process, to ensure that it is both rapid and effective, providing the essential assurance of integrity and accountability for those responsible for offences against International Law.
We discussed with the Secretary-General the Cyprus issue. The opportunity provided to initiate a discussion on the Cyprus issue between Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community is significant. With the personal intervention of the Secretary-General, a Personal Envoy has been appointed, who has the mandate to proceed with the discussions. We remain strictly committed to the UN Security Council resolutions for a Bi-zonal Bi-communal Federation. Τhe parties involved should take advantage of this opportunity and engage in dialogue. Greece will exhaust all possibilities so that there are positive developments on the Cyprus issue.
