Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement to journalists following his participation in the Plenary Session of the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format (Geneva, 18.03.2025)

We are in Geneva today, at the informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus Ιssue.

Following coordinated efforts by the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek Government, the UN Secretary-General has recently made the resumption of informal discussions on the Cyprus Issue a major priority for the UN.

The discussion focused on issues included in the Confidence Building Measures between the parties, such as demining, environmental protection, youth, restoration of cemeteries etc.

The appointment of a Personal Envoy on behalf of the UN Secretary-General to oversee the next steps of the discussions was decided.

It is extremely important that the Cyprus Issue is currently at the top of the United Nations agenda. Informal meetings will continue, both bilaterally and in the broad format.

We expect another Meeting to take place at the end of July.

We understand that, despite the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side deviates from the framework set by the UN Security Council Resolutions, it is extremely important to maintain dialogue in order to build trust.

The only solution is the reunification of the island.

Thank you.
