I am attending the Council of Foreign Affairs of the European Union for the first time as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. My presence coincides with a somber anniversary for Hellenism, the illegal invasion of Cyprus by Türkiye, on July 20, 1974.
During the Council, we will have the opportunity to discuss with my fellow ministers the ongoing aggression of Russia in Ukraine and exchange views with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on security issues.
Furthermore, I will inform my counterparts about the developments in Greek-Turkish relations, following the meeting of the two countries’ leaders at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, and underline the prospects that arise after this meeting.
Lastly, we will address issues related to EU-Turkish relations. It goes without saying that Türkiye's path to the European Union goes through respect for International Law, fundamental rights, and all the conditions set by EU Law. I look forward to a fruitful cooperation for the benefit of the European family.
