Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement upon arrival at the Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (New York, 23.09.2024)Today at the Foreign Affairs Council, we are going to discuss the two major fronts nearby Europe.

We are going to discuss Ukraine with the new Foreign Minister and reiterate our unwavering support for Ukraine. This is not a simple war. This is a war against revisionism. This is a war that concerns all of us.

As for the Middle East, we are going to reiterate our firm commitment towards an immediate ceasefire, our unwavering support to the two-state solution, humanitarian access to Gaza, and release without any condition of hostages. We need to prevent spillover, which is a serious global threat.

Here in New York, we will discuss this week about Europeans’ determination to present our values, the European values, concerning International Law, and peaceful resolution of disputes worldwide. And, of course, our commitment towards prosperity and peace worldwide.

Greece is going to be an elected member of the Security Council of the United Nations for the next two years. We aspire to become a constructive bridge between South and North, between West and East.

And we are going to reiterate our adherance to International Law, to present the case that the world, in the turmoil of those wars, in the presence of authoritarian regimes, needs to revisit the fundamental values of the Charter of the United Nations. And to return to the fundamentals that brought us together after World War II. Thank you.
