Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement upon arrival at the Meeting of the NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Brussels, 03.12.2024)

Today we will participate in the Meeting of the NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs, at a challenging juncture, marked by escalating crises.

We will have the opportunity to discuss NATO-Jordan relations with the King of Jordan, and we will be informed about the current situation in the Middle East and Syria, which is particularly concerning. The Embassy of Greece in Damascus is in constant communication with the entire Greek community to provide the assistance that may be required.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to discuss and exchange views with the new Secretary General, Mark Rutte. We both expressed the view that NATO should stand against every form of revisionism, as is now the case with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Greece fully supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

In view of the 2025 NATO Summit in the Hague next year, we will have the opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic Alliance. Strong links must be forged to strengthen the rule of law, democracy and integrity of all states.

Greece has always stressed the importance of the Southern Neighborhood and of the crises currently plaguing the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. And we will continue to play a productive role in resolving the major issues that affect us.

From its new position, starting on January 1, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Greece will consistently address the issues that create tensions and crises while being fully committed to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes while serving as a bridge between North and South, East and West. Thank you.
