Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statements following the Informal “Gymnich” Meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Helsinki, 29 August 2019)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statements following the Informal “Gymnich” Meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Helsinki, 29 August 2019)Today, in the context of the informal meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs, I had the opportunity to meet with my colleagues and talk to them about topics of shared interest.

First of all, we talked about hybrid threats and ways to deal with them.

We talked about the tense situation in the Persian Gulf and the search for ways to protect shipping. As you know, Greece, as a major shipping power, has a huge interest in this issue.

I then had a number of bilateral meetings with my colleagues, Mr. Maas, Mr. Christodoulides, Ms. Zakharieva and Mr. Dimitrov.

In fact, the meeting with Mr. Maas coincided with the Greek Prime Minister’s visit to Berlin. We expressed our shared will to further enhance our relations, and I accepted an invitation to visit Berlin.

Mr. Dimitrov and I had our first meeting, during which we discussed aspects of the implementation of the Prespa Agreement. I made it absolutely clear to Mr. Dimitrov that Greece will insist on strict implementation of the agreement.

Ms. Zakharieva and I agreed to meet in Sofia on 10 September.

Finally, I had the opportunity to brief my colleagues on Turkey’s provocations and the problems Turkey is creating in the Aegean, as well as on Turkey’s aggressiveness against the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.
