Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ written statement following the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Athens, 2 April 2020)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ written statement following the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Athens, 2 April 2020)At today’s meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the NATO member states, which was held via video conference, we talked about very important current issues.

We examined in depth the role NATO can play in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, through its extensive expertise in supply chain issues, civil protection planning and crisis management.

We also talked about the potential for increasing NATO’s presence in the Aegean, in the context of halting irregular migration flows and in light of the recent increase in flows towards our country. And we did this bearing in mind the coronavirus pandemic, which further complicates the problem of uncontrolled movements of people. I also mentioned the recent developments in Evros and the exploitation of people that undermines the Alliance’s values.

We also considered the situation in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Middle East and North Africa, and we looked at developments in Georgia and Ukraine, expressing our support for their Euro-Atlantic perspective.

We also discussed the Reflection Process mandate, through which we look forward to considering the future of our Alliance, together with our Allies and under the guidance of the North Atlantic Council.
