Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on the 47th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus (20.07.2021)

Marking the 47th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which led to the illegal occupation of more than a third of the island, we pay tribute to those who resisted the invader and especially to the fallen. Hellenism as a whole continues to experience the drama of the thousands of Missing, Displaced and Enclaved Persons in Cyprus.

Greece, in full coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, is working for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, a solution that will be based on the relevant Resolutions of the UN Security Council and the European Acquis. A Cyprus united within the framework of a bi-communal, bi-zonal Federation.

We completely oppose and reject in their entirety Turkey’s continuous attempts, as well as those of the current leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, to overturn this perspective.

The continuation of unlawful actions, as well as the new announcements by the Turkish side violate the relevant Resolutions of the UN Security Council, are in complete contradiction with the conclusions of the European Council, as well as with the appeals of the International Community. They are condemnable and should not go unanswered.

Turkey must immediately stop its provocative and infringing conduct and comply with International Law.
