We are meeting today under adverse conditions at a particularly critical phase of the war in the Middle East. The Foreign Affairs Council should immediately address three crucial issues.
First is the humanitarian aspect. There is a significant deterioration in humanitarian conditions. Greece advocates for the opening of additional humanitarian corridors so that aid can reach the affected areas without impediments and the essential infrastructure can be restored.
Secondly, we should promptly address the issue of preventing the spillover of hostilities. We are highly concerned about the current situation in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and, indeed, the Red Sea, where the security of navigation is under serious threat.
Thirdly, discussions about the day after should commence, offering a perspective to both sides, especially the Palestinian side. Today, we will meet with the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. I had the opportunity to meet all three, as well as the Heads of State and the Secretary-General of the Arab League. Their contribution is crucial in de-escalating the crisis.
First and foremost, any peace plan should include the outright condemnation of any form of terrorism. Secondly, it should involve the release of hostages, enabling discussions about the day after. And thirdly, it should offer a sustainable perspective. Furthermore, the regional security architecture should be placed under the protection of the international community. Any further delay at such a critical phase cannot be an option.
