Statement of FM D. Droutsas before the GAC and FAC, Luxembourg (12.04.2011)

D. Droutsas: This will be a week of intensive diplomatic efforts on Libya. We have the meeting today in Luxembourg, tomorrow the Contact Group on Libya will meet in Doha, on Thursday in Cairo we’ll have the meeting of the regional organizations and then the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Berlin.

I very much hope that these meetings will produce immediate results to start a political process on Libya and in Libya. We need to see a cease fire, an immediate, a credible, a verifiable cease fire and we need to see the two parties sitting on a table to discuss and negotiate on a political solution. We have said right from the beginning, and this is Greece’s position, that there cannot be only a military solution to the crisis. Priority remains of course the humanitarian assistance for the Libyan people and Greece is willing and ready to offer the island of Crete to be a hub for the support of the operations of the international community for humanitarian assistance to Libya.

Thank you very much.
