Deputy Minister Yannis Amanatidis is on a two-day visit to Egypt in the framework of regular contacts with the Greek Diaspora and the Patriarchate.
Deputy Minister Y. Amanatidis visited both the Achilopouleios and Abetios Schools and the Greek Cultural Centre in Cairo, and met with Christos Kavalis, President of the Greek Community of Cairo, and Christos Papadopoulos, Cultural Centre Director.
Subsequently, Deputy Minister Amanatidis toured the Schools and the Cultural Centre, where he conversed with male and female students and commended the administration, the staff, teachers and relevant agencies for their efforts to preserve and disseminate the Greek language and culture.
Next, the Deputy Minister met with Sheikh Osama El-Azhary, Advisor to Egypt’s President on Religious Affairs, and, in a particularly warm atmosphere, it was decided that the scope for respective activities on both sides is to deepen and expand. Moreover, Advisor El-Azhary invited Deputy Minister Amanatidis to visit the Monastery on Mt. Sinai together and the Greek Deputy Minister, for his part, extended an invitation to visit Athens. Both visits are expected to materialize shortly.
In addition, the Deputy Minister met the Archbishop of Sinai, Faran and Raitho, Damianos, and had the opportunity to exchange views and ideas at the Greek Embassy in Cairo with Greek businesspeople operating locally.
On Thursday Sept. 22, the Deputy Foreign Minister will have a series of meetings in Alexandria. Theodoros II, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, is to receive him at the Patriarchate, then he will be given a tour of the ‘Greek Quarter’, i.e. the Hellenic Community, the School, the Athletic Union of Greek Alexandria and the Retirement Home and the Greek Yacht Club of Alexandria.
